Matthew began working at Harris Shelton during law school and became a partner in 2009. His calm demeanor permits a solution focused outlook, rather than a problem focused one. Having represented health care providers for his entire career, he has handled a variety of legal matters for them, such as professional liability, workers’ compensation, insurance disputes, employment matters, contracts, and regulatory compliance.
Matthew also handles matters in the areas of premises liability, employment and labor law (FMLA, ADA, ADEA, Title VII), HIPAA compliance, and general tort litigation. In addition, Matthew advises clients on risk management issues generally and in the specific areas of HIPAA compliance, employment and labor issues.
The breadth of his experience is a benefit to his clients. Having handled hundreds of workers’ compensation cases, Matthew has developed his skill and comfort interacting with physicians. As a result, Matthew has been retained by peers for the sole purpose of handling medical depositions and medical evidence.
Beyond the courtroom, Matthew particularly enjoys assisting clients in making deals. The adage that lawyers (particularly litigators) kill deals is not applicable to his practice. While his experience makes him uniquely suited to spot potential problems, his solution focused approach assists in overcoming those challenges and results in a better product.
A native to the Memphis area, Matthew enjoys the outdoors, coaching youth sports, serving the community. He is a volunteer and supporter of the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.
